• Fun Info About the White House and our Early Presidents

The White House in Washington, D.C. wasn't always the president's home. George Washington lived in New York and Philadelphia. In 1800, the second president, John Adams, moved into the unfinished "White House."

Then in 1801, Jefferson opened the house to the public. The official naming of the White House came about 100 years later. Theodore Roosevelt named it because of—you guessed it—its white color! 🌞✨

The cornerstone of the U.S. Capitol was laid by then-President George Washington on September 18, 1793, in the southeast corner of the building. The Civil War interrupted the construction of the building as it became a hospital, barracks, and even a bakery! 🍀

Presidents' Day is a time to not only honor the birthdays and legacies of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, but also a time to reflect on and learn from the decisions of all our presidents past and present. We celebrate the contributions each of them has made to building the country we know and love. 💕
