First, the output of a patio heater is measured in British heat units (BTU). One BTU is the amount of energy needed to heat or cool one pound of water to one degree at sea level. You may see yard heaters with BTU outputs in the thousands or 10,000.

First, we'll figure out how many BTUs it takes to heat a patio by multiplying the cubic feet of the patio by the number of degrees we want to raise the temperature. If the temperature is around 42 degrees Fahrenheit and we want to heat it up to a comfortable 70 degrees, that's a 28-degree difference. Let's say our patio is 32 feet by 50 feet, and we want to heat it to a height of 6 feet. That's 9,600 cubic feet, multiplied by a temperature increase of 28 degrees, for a total of 268,800 BTU to heat our space. Next, we take the number of BTUs required divided by the BTUs of a particular patio heater model to tell us how many heaters we’ll need. 💗

• Is The Patio Heater Safe?

Any heating equipment may cause personal injury, damage, or fire if used improperly. To be on the safe side, do not use patio heaters in enclosed areas such as buildings or garages, or too close to the ceiling of a covered deck or patio.
