Caring for Your Wooden Gazebo
A wooden gazebo is an excellent addition to any yard, providing space to relax, entertain, and enjoy the weather while also providing shelter and shade. A wooden gazebo can be easily adapted to several different functions: either as shelter from the rain or sun or as an outdoor dining area when entertaining. Add a bar and some bar stools, a hot tub, or a sofa and you can relax however you want. No matter how you use it, your gazebo can enjoy a long life if maintained properly. ❤️👍
By its nature, wood requires some care and attention over its lifetime to ensure a long-lasting beautiful finish. Proper cleaning and maintenance will keep your wood products looking beautiful for years to come. Please follow the below guidelines to maintain your wood surfaces. 🎊
About Fading: Long periods of sun exposure can naturally lead to color fading. Storing or covering your wood products is recommended when not in use. ☀️
About Weathering: Wood is a product of nature and susceptible to weathering. As the climate changes, moisture moves in or out of the wood, causing tension which can result in cracking and or warping. Checking surface cracks in the wood along the grain is recommended and avoid rapid wetting and drying of the wood. 🙌
Keep Dry: Prolonged moisture and high or low humidity can also be harmful to wood. Cracking or splitting from extremes outside of the normal humidity range of 35-65% is not covered by our warranty. Water is no friend of a gazebo. Remove excess water or puddles in or on the gazebo and keep it dry. Do not use too much water when cleaning wood, and keep it as dry as possible. If your gazebo uses unpainted or untreated wood; then make sure to waterproof it with a clear waterproof sealant or a tinted waterproof sealant. Treat the wood against termites.🌴
Keep Your Wooden Gazebo Well-Ventilated: As we said above, excess moisture is not good for wooden structures like gazebos. Trimming shrubbery and plants growing around it, it is recommended that any surrounding plants are cut back to a distance of at least 3 feet, as not only can plants cause dampness and ventilation issues, roots and tendrils can compromise the wood itself.🎈
Periodic Inspection: Once a month it is important that you take some time to fully inspect the inside, outside, and roof of your gazebo. 💜💙
The basic step in maintaining your gazebo is cleaning it: Inside, be sure to remove any spiderwebs that you see. You can use a long-handled brush for this – especially useful if you have a fear of spiders! With any open-fronted building, you may be at risk of insects nesting inside. Please make sure that any wasp nests are destroyed by a professional, and if you are lucky enough to be chosen as a residence for bees, contact a local beekeeper to arrange the safe removal. Outside, make sure to remove all leaves and trash, and remove any plants or weeds that might start growing on the wood. Check the integrity of all the boards, look for any protruding nail heads and gently knock them back in, and replace any chipped or broken boards. 💕
Keep The Roof Leak-Free And Clean: Inspect the gazebo roof and check for any leaks and holes. Have these repaired as soon as possible? And while you’re up there, be sure to clean the roof and remove any debris such as leaves, branches, and plants that may have fallen or been blown onto it.🌱
Light Cleaning: Dust regularly using a slightly damp soft cloth, and then wipe dry (following the direction of the wood grain).✨
Monthly Cleaning: Clean the wood surfaces with a soft cloth and a gentle soap solution (dilute ¼ cup mild dishwashing liquid soap with 1 gallon of warm water). Rinse with water, and then immediately dry the surfaces using a soft cloth.🌼
If there has been a period of high winds or severe storms, it is definitely a good idea to perform extra checks on your gazebo – a fallen tree branch could do damage to the roof, and your first line of defense against the weather would be effectively wiped out.🌿
A wooden gazebo will look its best if you regularly treat the wood, from the ceiling and all frames. We recommend this process take place every 3-5 years.🎉
Biannual Oil Sealing: Twice yearly, after cleaning, apply a good quality wood-care oil to the surfaces. Recommended oils are linseed, teak, or tung oil. Refer to the oil manufacturer’s specific instructions for application.🍀
Minor stains or scratches can be lightly buffed with No.0000 steel wool, followed by an application of good quality wood-care oil, wiping in the direction of the grain.🌻
This guide will ensure that your gazebo is well-maintained and extends its usable life for decades.💐
