do I need a permit to put this up on my driveway?
Our gazebos are not permanent building, there is no engineer certification or other building permits. Please check with your local governing authority / local municipal codes regarding installation of structures before assembly.

can I attach canvas or vinyl sides to it?
The sling-style roof keeps the space below bright while providing shelter from the sun, and we don't have any other adaptive pieces to change the roof.

It appears it is wind rated for 31 mph. Is that correct?
It can hold 31.1 mph wind resistance with using stake.

How does it fasten to asphalt?
You can use concrete wedge anchor.

how is the wind resistance measured? We live in southern CA and do have Santa Ana winds from time to time. Seems like we sometimes will get gusts in excess of 31 mph. Will this structure hold up?
It is recommended to use expansion bolts. In addition, if you are afraid of insufficient strength, you can also buy some counterweights
